Holly: The Cat Who Found Her Way 200 Miles Home

Lost on a family road trip, a cat named Holly turned up two months later near her own front door, about 200 miles away. Scientists still can't fully explain it.

In November 2012, Jacob and Bonnie Richter of West Palm Beach, Florida, took their cat Holly along on an RV trip to Daytona Beach, roughly 200 miles from home. Then Holly vanished.

Lost far from home

Startled during the trip, Holly bolted and disappeared. The heartbroken family searched, waited, and eventually had to drive home without her, some 200 miles away.

A knock at the door, two months later

About two months later, a worn, thin, exhausted cat turned up near the Richters' home in West Palm Beach. A neighbor found her, and a vet scanned her microchip. It was Holly. Somehow, she had made it almost all the way back on her own.

A mystery scientists admire

Animal behavior researchers who looked into the story admitted that long-distance feline navigation like Holly's is extremely rare and not well understood. Nobody can say for certain how she did it, only that she did.

Holly's journey is a reminder that the bond between a cat and its people can be stronger, and stranger, than we know. Some cats really will find their way back to you.
